Food writer Peter Meehan recounted how his daughter came up and asked him “We’re animals, right? But what makes us people?” He answered: “we cook.”
My kids aren’t to that stage of curiosity yet, but they do like to watch us in the kitchen. I made these on a visit to my dad’s house. Way before we had Aiden and before I started cooking myself. As far as I’m concerned my dad has always cooked. It’s something I can remember from every visit as a child. Often our visits revolved around meals, and even more so now that I’m brining my own kids to visit.
This is probably the first time he was comfortable enough with me and my camera to forget that I was there. Or probably he was just concentrating. Sophie sat on that step stool and watched whenever he was in the kitchen. We had to put a gate up to keep the dogs because they kept licking her face.
