Long Shot

I went looking for Comet NEOWISE this week.

I wanted to make the image in West Texas. Not having the time to get to the Chisos, or even the Glass or Davis Mountains, I aimed for a field of wind turbines outside of Roscoe. I’d been there before and it was an easy round trip.

Scattered clouds turned into rain when I was 40 miles out. So, I turned south at Sweetwater toward San Angelo.

At San Angelo for gas, looking southwest. I considered sticking around to photograph this storm instead, but headed home. I figured I would find a spot somewhere to eat my dinner and make a few images.

I stoped somewhere along 206, north of Coleman. Figured I would get a few shots of the night sky.

Looking south (above), the sky was clear. Looking back north and west (below), you can see the edges of the storm that I had been trying to avoid just obscuring the horizon, where the comet was. You can just see some lightning flashes in the left of the image below from the storm that was moving over San Angelo.

I only shot with a 14mm lens. I had longer lenses but since I didn’t see the comet I figured it was either hidden by the clouds or it was too late in the evening to see it. I was showing these to my daughter the next morning when I saw it. Just above the lines to the right of the utility poll in the two images above.

I left home around 4:30 and got home around 1AM. It felt good to get out of the house and make something.

I will be trying again tonight.
