Comfort, Food
We buried my aunt in the morning. We were all going to meet back at my uncle’s house that evening for dinner. And in the space between these two things we went looking for some coffee and something to eat. We had Sophie, and my mom and one of my sisters in the car. (Only Ang and I actually like driving in Dallas.) I made these while we waited for the evening to begin. And I fucking love macarons and it was just a nice thing to find them that day. So yeah, I made some pictures. (I made a lot of pictures that day, but I won’t put them here.)
Sophie reached up from my lap and grabbed the other half while I was trying to get a shot of it. The last time I saw my aunt before she got sick was bringing Sophie over to visit. I wish they could have known each other better. She liked that I was teaching photography. Should would be happy now if she could see me in the kitchen.
These were all made by family members. I include that first one because we graduated from the same school and I am 98% sure there is a graduation photo of me against those same bricks.
The little girl in the background of that wedding photo is the same sister who was with us in the car that day. (I was a ring bearer at that wedding.)
She’s cooking with my grandparents in their kitchen in Midland. She’s baking in her house and sitting on the back porch of my dad’s old house. She always got us to help in the kitchen. She taught me how to mix drinks. I remember her baking wedding cakes when I was little, but not in the house that photo was taken in, it was in her old apartment, before she got married. She always cooked for my sister and I when we were there. I still remember the taste of that broccoli cheese soup and the re-heated pizza from Two Guys From Italy. Miss you, aunt Marsha.
The spot: Baked By Toni Rivard (this took some digging, it’s site is a chain frozen yogurt place now. I don’t think it survived the pandemic. All websites relating to it are gone and the socials are closed.) 6704 Snider Plaza, Dallas, Texas.
